New Upper Super Kanuka trail opens
If you haven’t been into the southern reaches of the Mākara Peak MTB in the last couple of months, now’s the time. Under the expert hands of Ricky from Slack Trails, a new Upper Super Kanuka opened on Christmas Eve, and it’s a great one.
Starting at the end of Upper Leaping Lizard (where it crossed the 4wd track and dives towards Lower Leaping Lizard and Nikau), the new trail heads around the western flank of the ridge in an amazingly flowy, swoopy, and surprisingly long trail through the Mānuka and Kānuka with views out towards South Mākara. Did I mention it’s got Mākara Peak’s best berms?
It finishes at the intersection of Leaping Lizard and Nikau, giving you options of heading out to South Karori and back to the carpark, down in Nikau Valley, or out along the original Super Kānuka to the pylon at the bottom of Aratihi.
Give it a try next time you’re out there.
